Contracts: Red box around dates

Can anyone confirm what exactly the red box in Contracts signifies? I'm thought maybe it's highlighting them because they are not in the current month?

Solution:

The item is greyed out and not active due to that date - E.g. the item period hasn't started yet or it has ended
