"Attention:" field on invoices

How does one populate the Attention field on invoices. It always seems to be blank if I generate a PDF manually, so I am wondering if it is dynamically added only when sending emails?
If I send an invoice to multiple contacts at once, do they each receive a customised version of the PDF with themselves in the Attention field?
